little ways to be good to the earth

Late this morning, I was taking a cold shower, because our water heater isn’t working very well.  I had been thinking earlier about what I wanted to write, as I haven’t posted for a little while, thanks to a short camp and me being lazy and not scheduling anything.  The cold shower wasn’t that bad, and it made me think about something – how little it takes for us to be good to the earth. Hello there, you lovely person reading this, you.  I’ve been out for a little while, and I’m sorry.  I had some issues with my computer and wifi and I couldn’t write or post from my phone either.  Also, if you got an email for a post a little while ago containing a link that didn’t work (again), I’m sorry.  I reconsidered and deleted it.

Anyway, July.  In all, this month has been magnificent and alluring.  As I circled through the photos I took this month a few minutes ago, I noticed a theme – blue, green, and happy.   Continue reading

the ocean trip / 1

(theme song: Water by Ra Ra Riot)

I can’t believe I just turned 15.  But I did, on Monday.  And I spent three days this week at the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware not only for my birthday, but for a short, relaxing vacation for my whole family.

I love the ocean.  The water is my element, for sure.  I don’t know what it is about the cold water swirling on your skin on a scalding hot day and the soft sand playfully covering you wherever you touch it, but that sort of thing excites me and calms me at the same time.

Some people don’t go in the water when they visit the ocean, which doesn’t make sense to me.  Some people believe that humans came out of the water, which doesn’t make sense to me either (i actually believe that all of it – us, the ocean, the sun were created artfully together).  Some people dismiss the sprawling beauty of the ocean by dumping waste into it and polluting the gift we have been given, which just saddens me a bit.

But me, the water makes me feel free and at peace.  Life is so short; it’s such a gift, and that’s why I want to experience mine to the fullest.  Why spend your life locked in the same place, in the same mindset, poring over what people think of you and the next thing you’re going to buy?  It’s so freeing to just forget all of that and dive in to someplace you love.

I’m really excited to share with you a video/short film I made of my experiences at the ocean, but I’m just not able to right now.  I’m going away again tomorrow morning at 4 a.m. and I’ll be gone for a week.  I might be able to share that video with you by the time I get home, but I’m still uncertain.

In the meantime, here are some photos I took that I think express the feeling that one has at the ocean, which I want to share with you… Continue reading
